The World University Index

I’ve built a new Cybernetic Studio project called The World University Index, it’s live now at anucybernetics.github.io/world-university-index, The README explains the premise:

You’re an academic filling out the ‘institutional context’ section of a grant application or a stressed marketing intern pumping out ‘study with us’ posts across all the socials. You need a defensible number to give for your university’s ranking which shows you in the best possible light. The World University Index has got your back.

It’s an authoritative-looking reference to the standing of the world’s universities — which reports, for every institution, its single best (lowest-numbered) placement across the major international rankings.

Every university proudly and relentlessly trumpets whichever global ranking happens to show it in the most flattering possible light each year — and with over a hundred ranking tables now in circulation (overall, by subject, by Sustainable Development Goal, and across several editions of each), there is almost always one in your institution can call itself world-leading.

You could look at the methodology if you like. But who’s got time for that? Honestly, just grab the number and use it with confidence.

The data is all legit. Every ranking figure is curated by hand from the published tables (the major rankings don’t offer a clean, openly-licensed feed, and their terms restrict bulk reuse), and a validation script keeps the dataset internally consistent rather than scraping anything live. Banded results like “201–250” are recorded at the lower bound, national league-table placements count too, and each institution’s page reports its single best position across everything, whatever the scope, country or year — always deadpan as “Nth in the world”.

The whole thing is open source under an MIT licence, so if your institution isn’t in there yet you can add it yourself and send a pull request. Go and find your defensible number.
